[IMPORTANT UPDATE] Boxing Ontario Member Clubs to Receive Funding
April 11, 2022
Dear Boxing Ontario Member Clubs,
Thanks to the provincial government and the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, Boxing Ontario has once again received funds that will be distributed to our member clubs.
Statement from the government: “Community sport clubs that are members of a PSO offer programming that supports alignment within the amateur sport system by offering a range of grassroots and competitive programming. This funding will support community sport clubs across the province in sustaining their organizations…”
Boxing Ontario has decided to distribute the funds using the number of members each club has. We also use the following ratio when determining voting delegates leading up to the Annual General Meeting.
Proposed amounts based on member size:
# of Members $ Amount
1-5 $500.00
6-15 $1,000.00
16-25 $2,000.00
26+ $3,000.00
** Depending on the number of clubs in each range, we may need to increase the proposed amount to meet the budgeted amount.
Number of members for each club will be as of April 30th, 2022. (Link to Membership Registration Portal included here).
Clubs can expect to receive the funds sometime in May.
If you have any questions surrounding this funding, please contact Erik Espinola at [email protected]

[IMPORTANT UPDATE] Ontario Lifting Capacity Limits & Proof of Vaccination
March 1, 2022
Dear Boxing Ontario Member Clubs,
Boxing Ontario continues to work in consultation with the Government of Ontario, through the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries as we communicate important government directives and updates related to the current global pandemic.
The Government of Ontario announced on February 14, 2022 that it is relaxing public health measures, in response to the recent status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of those changes, effective Mar. 1, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. the Government of Ontario will remove the remaining capacity limits for sport and recreational fitness facilities.
As well, effective Mar. 1, 2022, the Government of Ontario has announced it is lifting proof of vaccination requirements for all sport and recreational fitness settings.
Masking requirements for indoor facilities remain in place at this time.
Member clubs are encouraged to develop their own Return to Play plans in accordance with the Government of Ontario and their local Public Health Unit.
All updates will be archived on our COVID-19 Response Page.
If you have any questions or require additional support, please contact the KO COVID Task Force at [email protected] or your local public health unit.
We thank all Boxing Ontario clubs and members for their cooperation throughout these unprecedented times!
Sincerely,
KO COVID Task Force

[URGENT] Updates from Provincials & Re-Opening
February 14, 2022
Dear Boxing Ontario Family,
Please see below for some very important updates as we work hard to safely resume boxing in our province:
MONITOR FOR SYMPTOMS FOLLOWING PROVINCIAL SELECTION EVENT:
Despite our efforts to limit close contacts (including only allowing necessary bouts to occur, testing all participants, and hosting a closed event), in the past 24 hours we have had a number of confirmed cases of COVID, many presenting with symptoms. Please self-monitor and limit high-risk interactions.
GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS EASING:
The Ontario Government recently announced that restrictions will be loosening over the next month. Our KO COVID Task Force will be in touch with updates on what this means for our clubs, however, it’s important to continue to exercise safety protocols as Omicron is still very prevalent in our community.
NATIONAL SELECTIONS | BOXING ONTARIO BOARD UPDATE:
Congratulations to the athletes who secured their spots on the Boxing Ontario Provincial Team. This has been a roller coaster for everyone to say the least.
We are aware of the devastating impact the pandemic has had on our sport, and we are dedicated to rebuilding boxing in our province, nationally, and internationally. Recently, Boxing Ontario, in association with the IPTC (Inter-Provincial Territorial Committee) has made a number of inquiries into the recent Selection Criteria released by Boxing Canada. We are also advocating for the Nationals to be re-booked for 2022, ensuring that our National team members are secured through competition rather than through Selection Criteria.
Regardless of the outcomes to our requests, we will ensure opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally. Stay tuned!
For questions or concerns relating to National Selection submissions, please contact [email protected]
We need your support as we start the journey to rebuilding our sport. Please connect with us directly with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your incredible support and commitment to Boxing in Ontario.
Sincerely,
Boxing Ontario

[PROVINCIAL] ONTARIO COVID-19 SMALL BUSINESS RELIEF GRANT & BUSINESS COSTS REBATE PROGRAM
The provincial government announced an Ontario COVID-19 Small Business Relief Grant for small businesses that are subject to closure under modified Step Two of Roadmap to Reopen beginning January 5, 2022. It will provide eligible small businesses with a one-time grant payment of $10,000.
Additionally, online applications for the Ontario Business Costs Rebate Program will open on January 18. This program will provide eligible businesses that are required to close or reduce capacity with rebate payments for up to 100% of the property tax and energy costs they incur while subject to public health measures in response to the Omicron variant.
[FEDERAL] CEBA LOAN REPAYMENT EXTENDED
The Federal Government announced formally that the repayment deadline for CEBA loans to qualify for partial loan forgiveness is being extended from December 31, 2022, to December 31, 2023, for all eligible borrowers in good standing.
This extension will offer greater repayment flexibility to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations, many of which are facing continued challenges due to the pandemic. Repayment on or before the new deadline of December 31, 2023, will result in loan forgiveness of up to a third of the value of the loans (meaning up to $20,000).
Outstanding loans would subsequently convert to two-year term loans with interest of 5 per cent per annum commencing on January 1, 2024, with the loans fully due by December 31, 2025.

[NEXT STEPS] Provincial Qualifiers, Club Sanctions, Stage 2 Legislation
January 3, 2022
A Message from Boxing Ontario President, Jennifer Huggins
Dear Boxing Ontario Family,
Another gym shutdown was announced today by the government. This reality is incredibly disheartening for all our athletes, coaches, and gym owners. In fact, it’s unbelievable that we are back here once again, but together we must fight on. Like many of you, I am a gym owner and coach working hard to provide hope and inspiration to athletes, many of whom have been effectively locked out of their sport for nearly two years.
NEXT STEPS: (Please read thoroughly)
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Despite being faced with targeted restrictions, the Board, Boxing Ontario staff, and the KO COVID and High-Performance Committees are working hard to find a solution to keep this sport moving forward. As you are aware, the original plan of holding our Provincial Championships in January was recently postponed. In order to determine effective next steps, we require all athletes wishing to participate in the Provincial Qualifiers to register by Friday, January 7 at 12pm. This will ensure all eligible athletes are taken into consideration as we work forward and finalize a plan. I want to assure everyone that Boxing Ontario is making this a priority, and our staff and many volunteers are working hard for you.
*Boxing Ontario will be subsidizing the registration for the 2022 Provincials along with any event registration costs. More details to be announced.
COMPETITION SANCTIONS
For a short time, we were able to get back to doing what we love with a successful series of club competitions in December. Unfortunately, with the new legislation, club competitions will have to be paused. All existing sanctions will be refunded, and new sanctions will be accepted when Ontario Legislation allows.
STEP 2 LEGISLATION
As of January 5, 2022, at 12:01 a.m., Ontario is temporarily moving into Step Two of the Roadmap to Reopen.
It is with great disappointment that we must share this announcement of the closure of indoor sport and recreational fitness facilities including gyms, except for athletes training for the Olympics and Paralympics, and for select professional and elite amateur sport leagues.
The Ontario government recognizes a limited number of amateur sport leagues/associations to open in Step 2, and once again, boxing was not on this list. We feel that our sport, our members, and our clubs have shown again and again the level of safety and diligence we offer.
For details on the Ontario Government’s Step 2 measures, which directly impact our membership, please refer to this link.
If you have any questions or require additional support, please contact the KO COVID Task Force at [email protected] or your local public health unit.
To all our athletes, coaches, club owners, and officials, thank you for your patience, cooperation, and resilience during these challenging times.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Huggins
Boxing Ontario President

[IMPORTANT] Tournament Updates
December 23, 2021
Dear Boxing Ontario Members,
As the holidays approach and with the rise of COVID cases across the province, Boxing Ontario would like to remind its members to be vigilant during this period. We encourage all members to follow the recommendations set out by your local public health unit and the provincial and federal governments, including minimizing contacts and non-essential travel.
Boxing Ontario will continue to abide by government protocols, and we are continuously monitoring the situation to make informed decisions. The safety of our members is a priority.
If you have any questions or require specific support, please contact Boxing Ontario’s KO COVID Task Force at [email protected].
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season.
Provincial Tournament Update
In light of the current COVID situation, the 2022 Provincial Tournament has been postponed to a later date.
We are committed to ensuring a safe and equitable opportunity for our athletes to qualify for the Ontario Provincial Team. In order to determine effective next steps, we require all athletes to be registered for Provincial Qualifiers by January 7 at 12pm. You must be an “Open” category boxer to register, meaning 11+ fights on your record.
The $50 registration fee will be considered a deposit for intention to compete. If you wish be removed from the Qualifiers and receive a refund, please contact [email protected].
In the case that a tournament cannot be held, we will ensure a fair and equitable selection process and refunds will be issued at this time.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.
[POSTPONED] Brampton Cup
Out of an abundance of caution, the 2022 Brampton Cup has been postponed to late spring/early summer 2022. As one of the largest amateur boxing tournaments in Canada, the safety of all the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers – and their families and communities – is paramount.
Brampton Cup Statement: Due to the current trend of COVID-19, we would like to announce that the 2022 Brampton Cup has been postponed to late spring/early summer 2022. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the Brampton cup stress-free, safe, and healthy. As we’ve seen from last year’s trends, we are hoping the infection rates will drop in the spring with everyone staying safe and vigilant. The new dates will be announced early January. Stay safe, and see you all at the 2022 Brampton Cup. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

[IMPORTANT UPDATE] COVID Response Updates from the Ontario Government
December 16, 2021
Dear Boxing Ontario Member Clubs,
Last Friday, the Ontario government announced updated measures to protect against COVID.
Please find the original press releases here:
- [NEWS RELEASE] Ontario Taking Action to Protect Against Omicron Variant
- [BACKGROUNDER] Responding to Omicron and Protecting Our Progress
To Summarize:
The Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, is taking action to further encourage vaccination and help limit the spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant.
- Effective December 20, 2021, requiring proof of vaccination for youth aged 12 to 17 years participating in organized sports at recreational facilities.
- Delaying the lifting of proof of vaccination requirements beyond January 17, 2022, aligned with the reopening plan that stipulated that doing so was contingent on the absence of concerning trends.
- Effective January 4, 2022, requiring the use of the enhanced vaccine certificate with QR code and the Verify Ontario app in settings where proof of vaccination is required. The QR code can be used digitally or by printing a paper copy. Individuals can download their enhanced certificate with QR code by visiting https://covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/.
- Strengthening the verification process for medical exemptions and clinical trial exemptions by requiring a certificate with a QR code. Organizations and businesses that are under the provincial proof-of-vaccination system will be advised to no longer accept physician notes as of January 10, 2022.
- On the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Ontarians are strongly advised to limit their social gatherings and the number of gatherings they attend over the holiday season. Additional precautions should be taken if all individuals are not fully vaccinated or where vaccination status is unknown. Employers in all industries should make every effort to allow employees to work from home.
If you have any questions or require additional support, please contact the KO COVID Task Force at [email protected] or your local public health unit.
We thank all Boxing Ontario clubs and members for their cooperation and patience during these challenging times.
Sincerely,
KO COVID Task Force

[REMINDER] Return to Competition: Standby Bouts
December 3, 2021
Dear Boxing Ontario Member Clubs,
Following the return to competition in our province, we have numerous sanctioned events set to take place in the next few weeks. It is important that we follow all the guidelines set out by the Ministry of Health, the Boxing Ontario KO COVID Task Force, and our Medical Advisory Group. It is crucial that all measures outlined in our Return to Competition (Single-Day Club Events) document are adhered to.
The protocols outlined in this document have been carefully prepared with the direction of our Boxing Ontario Medical Team. Under the advice of the doctors, standby bouts have been deemed acceptable in the case that scheduled bouts fall through; however, these bouts shall not take place if they are in addition to the maximum number of bouts and standby participants. The maximum number of bouts for club competition remains ten (10) at this time. Standby Bout participants must remain in the venue area as spectators under the maximum capacity unless called upon to fill a position.
It is Boxing Ontario’s priority to keep our members safe. Following the successful execution of the first set of sanctioned competitions, we will re-evaluate with the medical team in combination with Ministry Guidelines to safely open restrictions. It’s important for these shows to be a success, and together we can move forward, help boxing continue to grow, and have our organization be a leader in safety measures; not just for combat sports but for all competitive sports.
We thank all Boxing Ontario clubs and members for their cooperation and patience during these challenging times.
Sincerely,
KO COVID Task Force

[IMPORTANT UPDATE] COVID VACCINE INFO
September 14, 2021
Hello members,
In an effort to gather needed information, the KO COVID Task Force had held off providing a formal update regarding COVID vaccinations to the Board of Directors or the membership as a whole. Although there is no formal legislation to reference at this time, the following information has been pieced together from the Ontario Government website and other credible sources.
The following is a possible Question and related Answer format regarding vaccine proof for member clubs:
Q: Does a boxing club fall under the vaccine requirements?
A: YES, boxing clubs would fall under the definition of; “Facilities used for sports and fitness activities and personal fitness training, such as gyms, fitness and recreational facilities with the exception of youth recreational sport;”
Children between ages 12 and 18 will be allowed to enter indoor sports and recreation facilities without showing proof of vaccination but only “solely for the purpose of actively participating in an organized sport.”
Q: Will Boxing Ontario create a specific policy for vaccines?
A: NO, Boxing Ontario will not create any policy or enforce vaccine policies on member clubs; however, each member club would be expected to follow the required legislation and/or public health guidelines. These would be enforced locally by public health officials, bylaw and possibly police.
Q: Will Boxing Ontario require vaccine proof at provincially sanctioned events?
A: YES, with the current information, proof of vaccine will be required to enter or participate in “Sporting events;”
Q: What date will this requirement come into effect?
A: As of September 22, 2021, Ontarians will need to be fully vaccinated (two doses plus 14 days) and provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access certain public settings and facilities. This approach focuses on higher-risk indoor public settings…”
Q: Why did Boxing Ontario not require vaccines or vaccine proof previously?
A: Our previous statement is still our belief; however, we must ensure clubs and members follow required legislation and/or regulations. “…Each member and club can make their own decision, and in the case of a club, they can require persons to be vaccinated.”

[UPDATE] ATHLETE EXEMPTIONS: STEP 3 OF "REOPENING ONTARIO" PLAN
July 15, 2021
Dear Boxing Ontario Club Owners,
As you know, Ontario will be moving into Step 3 of the “Roadmap to Reopen” on Friday, July 16 at 12:01am.
Following Boxing Ontario’s update regarding club re-opening requirements, the KO COVID Task Force would like to provide further clarification concerning exemptions for our athletes:

Prior to a member club opening, the following must be completed and/or met:
To download a PDF version of this document, please click here.
We encourage you to contact your local public health unit for further recommendations or clarification.
Vaccinations
We have received many questions regarding vaccinations. Boxing Ontario recognizes the potential value to being vaccinated against any communicable illness/disease which could affect our members. This is inclusive of COVID-19. However, each member and club can make their own decision, and in the case of a club, they can require persons to be vaccinated.
There is a variety of requirements throughout Canada and around the world on vaccination proof for travel and potentially competitions. Currently, there is no requirement in Ontario for our members to be vaccinated. However, we encourage each person to seek professional medical advice from a trusted source.
If you have any questions, comments, or require specific support, please email the KO COVID Task Force at [email protected].

[IMPORTANT UPDATE] "REOPENING ONTARIO" PLAN - STEP 2
June 30, 2021
Dear Boxing Ontario Club Owners,
The provincial government announced that Ontario will now be moving into Step 2 of the “Roadmap to Reopen” on Wednesday, June 30 at 12:01am.
It is with great disappointment that we must announce a change for the Step 2 allowances for our member clubs.
The Ontario government recognizes a limited number of amateur sport organizations to open in Step 2, and boxing was not on this list. We feel that our sport, our members, and our clubs have shown again and again the level of safety and diligence we offer.
During previous openings, we had been allowed to approve clubs to begin training, and with over 70 clubs running there were ZERO cases of COVID-19 related to community transmission.
Boxing Ontario does not understand why we were not included in the Step 2 allowances, and we are relaying our frustrations to all levels of government. We encourage you to contact your local MPP and voice your concerns as well.
Please see the updated 3-Step Reopening plan below, and if you have any questions, comments, or require specific support, please email the KO COVID Task Force at [email protected].

[UPDATE] BOXING ONTARIO REQUESTS RECONSIDERATION TO OPEN BOXING CLUBS IN GREY ZONE
Boxing Ontario has sent a formal request for reconsideration to the government to open boxing clubs in Grey Zone regions. On behalf of Boxing Ontario, letters were sent by President Jennifer Huggins to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation and Community Programs Division, Steve Harlow; the Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, the Hon. Lisa MacLeod; and the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford.
View the content of the letter to Minister Lisa MacLeod below:
DATE: Wednesday, December 9, 2020
ATTENTION: Hon. Lisa MacLeod | Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries
Re: BOXING ONTARIO – REQUEST FOR RECONSIDERATION TO OPEN BOXING CLUBS IN GREY ZONE
Dear Hon. Lisa MacLeod,
I am writing to you today as President of Boxing Ontario to appeal for your reconsideration of boxing club closures in Ontario. Our clubs have poured their hearts, souls and savings into their businesses which have been needlessly shutdown in the Grey Zones. I speak as a boxing gym owner myself when I say, this is our livelihood.
Boxing Ontario was previously afforded the ability to approve our clubs across Ontario to open under our strict safety and health requirements. Seventy clubs were approved with ZERO cases of COVID-19 related to any club or the sport of boxing as a whole.
Our gyms across Ontario are dedicated to helping families, grass roots, competitive and healthy living programs, and supporting individuals in need of physical rehabilitation. Clubs continue to employ staff and mentor youth through competitive and recreational coaching programs. Though the majority of our clubs quickly pivoted to a virtual format after the first shutdown in March, boxing gyms are struggling to sustain their physical locations through these efforts. While we continue to stay connected with our community, the shutdown of many locations is having a devastating effect on the industry as a whole; this reality threatens the future of our club business and livelihood.
Boxing Ontario has over 100 clubs and 10,000 members across Ontario, and they are all asking for you to support our ability to approve our clubs’ safe opening and operation in Grey Zones.
I invite you to visit our various facilities to see for yourself how our protocols and procedures go above and beyond those implemented by other businesses who are deemed safe to remain open during lockdown in Ontario.
I also am asking to meet with you personally as a strong stakeholder in the combat PSOs of Ontario.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Huggins, Boxing Ontario President, Board of Directors
3-Star AIBA International Boxing Referee/Judge
[ACTION REQUIRED] WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need your help as we continue the fight to re-open gyms affected by the Grey Zone lock down mandate. As you’re aware, with each new legislation, the Boxing Ontario Board Members and the COVID Task Force have worked tirelessly to help keep sanctioned gyms safely operational. The provincial government removed Boxing Ontario’s ability as a provincial sport organization to allow our members to operate safely and effectively in Grey Zone regions.
Please consider sending a letter to your local MPP voicing your concerns. We have prepared a sample letter which you can download, fill out, and send.
Thank you for your support!
[IMPORTANT] ALL TRAVEL PERMITS SUSPENDED
December 1, 2020
Dear Boxing Ontario Members,
Please be aware of the following information provided by our National Sports Organization (NSO), Boxing Canada:
Boxing Canada will not endorse any travel for Interprovincial OR International training or competitions.
Furthermore, no insurance coverage will be afforded if unauthorized travel were to occur and disciplinary action could be brought forward.
We were trying to work with other provinces to create travel opportunities prior to this information coming, and we will continue to work hard to create safe opportunities both locally and abroad.
Please keep updated with the latest Boxing Ontario COVID Updates as the situation continues to evolve. Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the situation.
Stay Well and Stay Safe.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors | Boxing Ontario
IMPORTANT COVID LOCKDOWN UPDATE
November 23, 2020
Attention all members,
We have reviewed the Ontario Government’s most recent COVID-19 announcements, documents, and legislation.
As of 12:01 this morning, an amendment occurred which does significantly affect our clubs in the GREY ZONE.
With this amendment, ALL CLUBS MUST CEASE BEING OPEN for any training. This must occur immediately.
We are very disappointed in the changes to the legislation, which have removed our ability as a PSO to allow our members to operate safely and effectively, and will voice this to the Ontario Government at all opportunities. If you would like to voice your concerns, please consider contacting your local MPP.
With the closure of clubs, the following financial and other supports may be of use to you:
- COVID-19: Help for Businesses in Ontario
- Small Business Recovery Resources
- Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan
We do understand the negative impact this will have on you, your clubs, staff, and members, however, there is no way to avoid this.
If you require more information or specific support, please email [email protected]

[UPDATE] – NEW SCREENING REQUIREMENTS FOR ONTARIO WORKPLACES
September 30, 2020
A new requirement for all businesses in Ontario to screen employees for COVID-19 before entering the workplace is now in effect. This change was made over the weekend and was not broadly communicated.
An amendment was made to Ontario Regulation 364/20 “Rules for Areas in Stage 3” under the Reopening Ontario Act, which requires all places of business to comply with the advice, recommendations and instructions issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health on screening individuals.
At the same time, the Ministry of Health issued a COVID-19 Screening Tool for Workplaces (Business and Organizations). The Tool provides screening questions for employees and visitors seeking to enter the place of business.
This means that each Ontario workplace must now pro-actively screen employees and visitors for COVID-19 prior to entry into the workplace each day. This does not apply to people working from home. This became effective September 26th.
As always, Boxing Ontario recommends contacting your local public health unit for further recommendations or clarity.
If you require more support, please email [email protected]
[KO-COVID] – KO-COVID TASK FORCE UPDATE ON COVID-19
September 30, 2020
Ontario has seen significant increases in COVID-19 cases over the last number of days. There currently is an open letter to the government from a number of doctors to go backwards and restrict gatherings and organizations from being open.
Boxing Ontario and the Boxing Ontario KO-COVID Task Force have worked diligently to ensure our members have the most up-to-date information and supports. Currently we know of no outbreaks related to our member clubs. If we as a whole follow sound practices and ensure that COVID-19 is not introduced to our facilities it will ensure a safer place for all.
If there is a regulation for “gyms” to close or revert to Ontario Stage 2, be sure we are here to support you and ensure your facilities can remain open safely.
With the above said, please continue to monitor your local area and ensure you are following all required health and safety processes. If you need guidance or have questions please reach out to [email protected].
TEAM BOXING ONTARIO!

[REMINDER] – IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS FOR TRAINING
August 24, 2020
Please review the below recommendations for pad work/personal training and social circles. It’s critical to follow these guidelines in order to keep our boxers, coaches and community safe!
SAFE FOCUS PAD TRAINING PROTOCOLS
Focus Pad or similar work can be considered “Personal Training” and as such:
- Physical distancing need not occur, however…
- All involved persons should wear a face mask (covering the mouth and nose) when closer than 2m.
- The pads would have to be disinfected/sanitized between athletes.
As always, Boxing Ontario recommends contacting your local Public Health Department for further support, recommendations or clarity.

Do you have questions about pad work, personal training, or do you require more support? Please email [email protected]
– A Note from Jennifer Huggins, President of Boxing Ontario –
With the increased use of social media, you may notice your fellow coaches, boxers, and friends posting unsafe practices. While these recommendations are geared towards our members, it’s important to continue to educate in and outside of our Boxing Ontario Family. The safety protocols outlined are not only meant to keep our boxers and coaches safe, it’s important we all do our part to keep the community safe and reduce any chance of spread.
Please share our KO COVID Task Force recommendations with your networks, and feel free to have them contact us directly with any questions or concerns. We are happy to help guide members and non-members alike to ensure the continued safety of our sport and community. I realize that these times can feel very limiting, however, if we stay on track we will be back in action as we work toward a safe return to competition.
Thank you for your continued support.

[UPDATE] – COVID-19 SOCIAL CIRCLE RECOMMENDATIONS
July 20, 2020
In order for a member organization to implement “SOCIAL CIRCLES”, the following must be considered and/or occur.
- A “SOCIAL CIRCLE” is a term used by the Government of Ontario to allow groups of people to interact without physical or social distancing rules.
- Please realize that utilizing a social circle does not eliminate the risk of COVID-19 transmission and could be considered a riskier activity.
- A social circle plan must be developed and agreed upon by all persons involved (as per the Government of Ontario information).
- If one (1) member of the social circle becomes ill or test positive for COVID-19 all members should isolate and seek testing. In addition, communication with the local public health is recommended.
- All members of a “SOCIAL CIRCLE” should fill out the Boxing Ontario “Social Circle Agreement” or a similar agreement (as per the Government of Ontario Information).
- At no time shall the total size of a social circle exceed the number allowed by government or public health regulations.
- For further reference: https://www.ontario.ca/page/create-social-circle-during-covid-19
- It is recommended that the local Public Health be contacted to ensure this meets their requirements.
- An example of a working social circle (of 7 people) is as follows:
– Athlete A
i. Athlete A’s life partner; who the athlete lives with.
– Athlete B
i. Athlete B’s mother; who the athlete lives with.
ii. Athlete B’s father; who the athlete lives with.
iii. Athlete B’s sister; who the athlete lives with
iv. Athlete B’s partner; who the athlete has close contact with.

[NOTICE] – PHASE 2: MEMBER UPDATE FOR “RETURN TO TRAINING”
June 10, 2020
With the Ontario Government’s announcement of “A Framework for Reopening our Province: Phase 2: Restart — Stage 2”, we have reviewed the document which can be found here.
The following is information we can provide to you based on the review:
1. Going forward, Ontario will be opening based on regional guidelines.
- This means your Regional (or local) Public Health may develop specific needs of your facility and we ask that you watch for these.
- Your facility MUST comply with any region-specific needs to remain approved under the Boxing Ontario Return to Training.
2. Gatherings of persons – here is a direct quote from the document:
“Public & Social Gatherings
Regardless of where you live in Ontario, social gathering limits will be expanded to up to 10 people. People must still practice physical distancing, by keeping at least two metres away from others outside of their direct household. This change to social gathering size will apply to people across the province, regardless of whether their region has moved into Stage 2.”
What this means for your club:
- All other portions of the Boxing Ontario “Return to Training” plan MUST remain in place.
- You can allow 10 persons TOTAL in your facility as of FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 2020.
- The 10 persons includes athletes, coach(s), and other staff or volunteers.
- If you cannot accommodate “Physical Distancing” you must lower your club access number to one at which you can.
We have had many clubs successfully approved to open, and now they are moving forward.
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES:
Boxing Ontario Memberships
As outlined in the “Return to Training” protocols, every participant who returns to your club must have or apply for current Boxing Ontario membership (Recreational or Competitive). It is the club’s responsibility to submit recreational memberships. Please DO NOT have your clients call the office. Direct all members to the form on our website (we are working to digitize this).
No Hand Targets or Physical Contact Training
It has been brought to our attention that many coaches continue to work pads with their boxers and even post this on social media. Unfortunately, with the physical distancing and safety protocols laid out by the Ontario Government, this activity is not permitted. We ALL need to respect the guidelines in order to safely return to training and gain the public trust.
Please email [email protected] for more information or if you have questions.

[COVID-19 Update] A Note From Boxing Ontario
MARCH 23, 2020, 1:30 P.M. (EST)
Dear Boxing Ontario Members and Community:
As we are all aware, COVID-19 continues to impact our boxing family, communities locally and around the globe. Like all of us, the Boxing Ontario Board is concerned for those impacted by these events and are doing our part to help stop the spread of the virus. We have been and remain in constant contact with the Government of Ontario for updates and instruction. Additionally, we continue to work closely with our partners to ensure a safe and supportive transition through this challenging time.
CALL TO ACTION:
In an effort to quickly and effectively combat the spread of the virus, on March 17th the Government of Ontario announced that it was taking decisive action by making an order declaring an emergency. With the declaration of an emergency, non-essential establishments were legally required to close effective immediately. This includes all facilities providing indoor recreational programs; public libraries; schools as defined in the Education Act; licensed childcare centres; bars and restaurants, and theatres.
With these critical actions the Federal and Provincial governments have started implementing strategies to not only protect the health of its citizens but also to support the economic infrastructure we all depend upon. The spread of COVID-19 poses a challenge to not only our health but also Canadian businesses. With the situation continuing to evolve, we suggest that you continue to monitor the media centre of both the provincial and federal governments for information non how to receive support. We have included some important links below.
WHAT NOW?
Like many of you, I personally had to close my gym with no timeline for when we will be able to reopen our doors. We’re all faced with challenges which feel overwhelming and uneasy to say the least.
The Board wants to stay connected to our clubs and the boxing community at large. In that context, we will be delivering appropriate updates to our members that can be accessed remotely. Additionally, Boxing Ontario will continue to develop revised plans for all events and programs that have been canceled or postponed to date.
True to its nature and in the best spirit of the sport, the Boxing Ontario community has developed incredibly creative, fun and heartwarming contributions to help keep everyone active during this difficult time. Please continue to tag the Boxing Ontario social media accounts on any post so we may share and inspire our boxing family as they make their way through this challenging time. The positivity has been inspiring and so very powerful! to continue fighting their way through the pandemic.
These are extraordinary circumstances and we thank you for your positivity, patience and understanding. A special thanks to all of the Boxing Clubs for your continued support. We are truly grateful and lucky to have you in the family.
Stay safe and take care of yourself and others!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Huggins, Boxing Ontario

Boxing Ontario Announces All Sanctioned Events Suspended Until Further Notice
BY BOXING ONTARIO | MARCH 12, 2020, 10:10 P.M. (EST)
In light of recent developments with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and after extensive consultation with medical experts, legal counsel and on the recommendations of Boxing Canada, Boxing Ontario is suspending all sanctioned events until further notice. This is a very difficult decision given we are in the midst of Golden Gloves tournaments and entering the qualification timeframe for the 2020 National Championships; however Boxing Ontario’s greatest concern is for the health and safety of all boxers, coaches, officials and physicians.
Affected Sanctions Include:
- All boxing galas (regional and provincial). The Golden Gloves Provincial Championships are therefore postponed for the moment.
- Cancellation of events outside the province (competitions and training camps)
- Coaching/Officiating courses
- Training or evaluation camps
- Boxing Ontario AGM
- 2020 National Championships: View Boxing Canada Statement
Boxing Ontario will review as circumstances evolve and more information becomes available and provide an update to membership as we receive it from the ministry and our NSO.
We have been referred to a dedicated COVID-19 Resource Centre that provides information about the various implications of COVID-19 on businesses and their workforces, as well as key contacts should you have specific questions.
We recommend that club owners and members regularly check their public health websites for updated information regarding COVID-19. You can find a link to your local public health unit using the following site: https://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/common/system/services/phu/locations.aspx
All clubs will be able to reschedule their sanctions at later dates. Boxing Ontario will not accept any new sanctioned event requests until further notice. Refunds will not be given at this time, but you may reschedule your show for a later date once the suspension is lifted.
Clubs and Gyms may continue training, however, they should limit participation to boxers and coaches, and discourage folks who “want to watch” to help reduce the risk of spreading the Coronavirus.
As a reminder, please remember these helpful instructions for your local clubs and gyms.
1. If sick, please stay home
2. Clean gym equipment/space thoroughly and often
3. Wash hands often with warm soapy water for 20 seconds
4. Avoid shaking hands, and try not to touch the face, eyes, or nose
5. Follow good personal hygiene after every boxing practice, including showering with soap and water and washing uniforms after use.
We thank you for your patience in this matter.
Yours in Boxing Ontario,
