Toronto, ON – On March 30, Boxing Ontario’s High Performance and Coaching Committee held a third training camp as part of the preparation for Ontario’s athletes gearing up for the U17/U19/U23 Canadian Championships. This camp was hosted at the newly renovated Kingsway Boxing Club in Toronto, ON.

The primary aim of the camp was to conduct test matches, giving athletes the opportunity to engage in multiple rounds with different opponents and receive feedback from the committee members and Provincial Coach Ray Napper. Wildcard athlete applicants were invited for assessment in their pursuit of team selection, giving the committee a chance to evaluate their performances.

The training camp comes on the heels of the announcement that boxing has returned to the Olympic programme for LA28, reigniting the fervour of the Olympic dream for a number of these young athletes in attendance.

International referee and judge, Jennifer Huggins, who is also a member of World Boxing’s Sport and Competition Committee, provided invaluable insights to the athletes regarding the Winning Style of Play along with the Scoring Criteria and its application in competition.

Athletes from across Ontario displayed formidable grit, technique, and tactical acumen during their test matches, impressing the High Performance and Coaching Committee with their skills and poise.

A team of experienced Boxing Ontario officials facilitated the test matches, creating an authentic competitive environment and equipping athletes and their coaches with constructive feedback.

The U17/U19/U23 National Championships, hosted by Boxing Canada, are set to occur in partnership with the Quebec Open from May 29 to June 1 in Quebec City.

Boxing Ontario is still accepting applications for wildcard athletes and team coaches for the U17/U19/U23 team. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications before the April 6 deadline. Further information and application forms can be found on the Boxing Ontario website.

Boxing Ontario extends its gratitude to the High Performance and Coaching Committee for organizing this camp, as well as to the Boxing Ontario Officials, Jennifer Huggins, the athletes’ personal coaches, and all the prospective Team Coaches for contributing their time and expertise. Special thanks to Kingsway Boxing for graciously hosting the camp in their brand-new facility.

The next training camp returns to Kingsway Boxing on April 13.
