Victoria Vergos

I put in a lot of work daily and give the best I can, and to see it show and pay off and get me a little farther each time, I’m happy and just want to keep it going.

Why did you first start boxing? Tell us about your progression in the sport.

I started boxing roughly 3 years ago after a long run in my gymnastics career. I was a competitive gymnast for approximately 6 years but eventually found my passion for boxing. I have a boxing family and started with just knowing basics—then I realized that I was actually really into the sport and had a good amount of coordination, conditioning, and strength from gymnastics, so I decided to start at Steeltown Boxing Club. Things progressed pretty fast, and after enough training and learning, I got my first fight in May 2022, and since then we’ve kept it going to 17 fights.

What has your biggest challenge been as a competitive boxer?

I would say my biggest challenge has been finding opponents. There aren’t many Open class Youth females which is a struggle when competing in local tournaments and club shows. I either rematch or have myself fighting Elite girls who are in a different weight class. For example, the Canada Winter Games of this year only had two weight categories for females (52kg and 60kg) and at that time I was fighting at 54kg but was growing and found it hard to go any lower, so I had to spend a couple months working on my strength and putting on some muscle weight. Still, I was pretty small in that division for the tournament, and I felt intimidated before it sure, but I did what I was taught and told to do, believed in myself above anyone else, and it all worked out. I understand that taking any fight and opportunity is worth it no matter the difference of weight, levels, etc.

What has your biggest achievement been as a competitive boxer?

My biggest achievement would have to be either taking home silver at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island. That was a huge stepping stone for me and as much as I was nervous and had a lot of uncertainty going into it, I don’t regret it any of it and am so happy I was able to travel with a fun team, make memories, have challenging fights and get to where I did.

What are your future goals in the sport of boxing?

For the future, I plan on getting as much experience I can as a Youth, and getting many fights and opportunities to travel and learn, and see where I go as an Elite. I’m not exactly sure on which route of amateur or professional I’d rather go down, but most likely amateur because I just feel like it’s my style and there is still a lot more to come with that.

How did you feel when you found out that you were selected to represent Canada at the Continental Championships in Colombia?

Very blessed, thankful, and excited are the best words for it. I put in a lot of work daily and give the best I can, and to see it show and pay off and get me a little farther each time, I’m happy and just want to keep it going.
