Tournament number one of the Champion Series was a smashing success this past weekend in Brantford. Hosted by Bill Williams and the excellent volunteers of the Brantford Youth Boxing Club, the tournament boasted great crowds for every show and displayed some outstanding boxing. The quality of competition shown by the novice boxers shows that boxing in Ontario is definitely on the rise! Congratulations to all boxers, coaches, and clubs and a big thanks to all official, volunteers, and the Summerhays brothers for making this weekend one to remember. Here are the Award Winners from the 2005 Summerhays Tournament:
Best Female Bout
Tamara Knowles (Whip Boxing Academy) vs. Jodie Michalycia (Sault Boxing Club)
In the 60kg Senior Female Novice division, the two duked it out before a capacity crowd and landed lots of scoring blows in a 34-25 decision for Michalycia.
Best Female Boxer
Carol-Lynn Holden – Ring London Boxing Club
Carol-Lynn dominated the 63kg Senior Female Novice division by displaying exemplory ring skills and mastery. She retired her opponent in the 2nd round in Bout #1 and outscored her opponent (RSCO2) in Bout #2 to capture the title and the award.
Best Male Bout
Anthony Francis (Ajax Boxing Club) vs. Kevin Boodoosingh (Champion Boxing Club)
In the Gold Medal bout for the 54kg Male Novice Cadet C title, these determined battlers gave the packed crowd a big-time show, with Francis claiming the victory in 31-25 decision.
Best Male Boxer
Phillip Hunter – Ajax Boxing Club (pictured above)
Phillip won all THREE bouts to claim the 75kg Male Senior Novice title. He retired his opponent in the 2nd round in Bout #1 and then outscored his opponent (RSCO2) in the 2nd round in Bout #2. On Sunday’s final match, Phillip was well ahead and had his opponent flustered, resulting in a disqualification to the opponent and a gold medal for the Ajax prodigy.
