FEBRUARY 7, 2022 | TORONTO, ON. – Top athletes from across the province assembled at Kombat Arts in Mississauga on February 5 and 6 for an action-packed weekend of bouts at Boxing Ontario’s 2022 Provincial Team Selection Competition.

The intention of the Provincial Selections was to enable athletes to compete in order to advance one step closer to securing their spots on the Provincial Team ahead of Boxing Canada’s National Team Selections.

The tournament-style event witnessed athletes competing in six contested categories as determined by an official draw. Boxers who were not required to compete (weight classes with two or fewer registered boxers or athletes who received a bye) were required to attend a formal weigh-in in order to advance further in the selection process.

Held in conjunction with Boxing Ontario’s KO COVID Task Force, the competition was executed with public health precautions in order to protect the health and safety of all athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, and their communities. These precautions included COVID antigen testing for all in attendance, PPE, and limiting event capacity with no spectators. Being a closed-door event, the competition was live-streamed to boxing fans via the Millions.co platform.

At the conclusion of the event, the re-opening of club competition sanctioning in Ontario was announced in addition to plans of four upcoming tournaments including the famed Brampton Cup. The success of the 2022 Provincial Selection Competition provides a sign of optimism to the boxing community following years of public health mandated restrictions, closures, and delays since the onset of COVID-19.

Boxing Ontario would like to thank all the athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers for their dedication, resiliency, and hard work. The bouts were competitive and exciting, with talent, technique, and determination on display. Boxing Ontario’s Board of Directors released a statement following the event:

“Your performance as athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers has made you true ambassadors of our sport at the most critical time. This has been a long journey, and it’s only the beginning as we pick up momentum and build back boxing in Ontario, Canada, and ultimately on the world stage! It has been such an honour to work with you to make this meaningful advancing event possible. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
