Boxing Ontario’s ‘Fabulous Four’ have headed to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. Boxing competiton begins on March 17 and continues through to March 23 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, with the medal bouts talking place on March 25, 2006.

Our amateur boxers representing Ontario begin boxing today with their schedule as follows:

Friday March 17, 2006 – Adam Turpish (Windsor Amateur) at 69kg opens against Sri Lanka (28 in weight class)  Adam won RSCOS-3

Saturday March 18, 2006 – Isho Shiba (McGrory’s) at 54kg boxes Tanzania (24 in weight class) Isho won RSC-2

Saturday March 18, 2006 – Ibrahim Kamal (Cabbagetown) at 60kg boxes Papua New Guinea (28 in weight class)  Ibrahim won RSCOS-3

Sun March 19, 2006 – Glenn Hunter (St. Catharines) at 81kg boxes New Zealand (19 in weight class)

Boxing has appeared in every Commonwealth Games since 1930. Bouts will in in 11 weight categories, with 11 gold medals up for grabs. The competiton is structured in a knockout format. This means that only winners of each bout proceed to the next round. Bronze medals will be awarded to losers of the semi-finals.
