It’s time for #FeatureFriday! On Fridays we’ll share the stories behind the faces of Boxing Ontario, and this week’s feature is Syd Vanderpool of SydFIT Health Centre in Kitchener!

“My father, John, introduced myself and 4 older brothers to the physical regime of training for boxing very early on. With over 100 amateur bouts, my first amateur fight came at the age of 6.

“In 1991, I was a Canadian National Champion and fought alongside teammates Arturo Gatti and Kirk Johnson. In March of 1993, I made the decision to start a 13-year professional boxing career. I have extensively trained with some of the world’s finest trainers including the legendary Emanuel Stewart, Goody Petronelli, John Davenport, Arnie Boehm, and Adrian Teodorescu.

“My unique abilities in and out of the ring allow me to be a motivational coach and speaker. My experience training with world-renowned athletes such as Lennox Lewis, Zab Judah and Hector Camacho gives me insight into the higher levels of professional sport. These experiences ultimately led me to achieve the IBF #1 world ranking in May 2002. I retired in 2005 with a professional record of 35-4 with 23 knockouts.

“Now, I bring my love of sport to the SydFIT Health Centre, as a successful business owner, mentor, and Elite Trainer, where I share my passion with athletes and coaches alike.”

Syd joined ‘The Knockout’ on BarnBurner Network & Zingo TV and fielded questions from the expert panel. Syd shares stories about his impressive pro-boxing career in which he fought some of the toughest opponents at the time, his mentors and inspiration to become a coach, and his goals for boxing in Ontario. This episode’s panelists included Ryan Rannelli, owner of No Excuse Fitness & Boxing in Burlington; Jennifer Huggins, owner of Kingsway Boxing in Etobicoke; and Armand Teodorescu, owner and head coach of the legendary Atlas Boxing Club.

‘The Knockout’ is a new weekly live show on the BarnBurner Network & Zingo TV and is hosted by Noel Clubb!
