PRESS RELEASE | Boxing Ontario – Olympic Pathway & Tournament Announcement
It is an exciting time for boxing with the 2020 Olympics Games being less than a year away. As many of you know the International boxing calendar has been impacted by ongoing changes happening with AIBA. The delay in certain key events has trickled down and has impacted some of our events however Boxing Canada has confirmed important dates and we are now able to release our upcoming tournament schedule as they relate to the Olympic Game pathway.
Olympic Cycle For The 2020 Games
Silver Gloves 2019 – Provincial Olympic Box Offs: October 3rd – 6th, 2019
The purpose of the Silver Gloves is to allow Ontario Boxers to qualify to compete in the Canadian Olympic Qualifier which will be held in either December 2019 or January 2020 (date to be confirmed shortly).
- Elite Open Class & Youth born in 2001 are eligible
- 8 weight classes for men (52, 57, 63, 69, 75, 81, 91 and 91+)
- 5 weight classes for women (51,57, 60, 69 and 75)
- 1st place winners in above-listed weight classes will advance
- **Novice Elite, Novice and Open Youth boxers born in 2002, and all Novice and Open Junior boxers will be eligible to box in the tournament in non-advancing categories.**
[All other non-advancing elite women’s weight classes will also be open to tournament registration.]
[Out of province/out of country boxers welcome to enrol for non-advancing competition]

Canadian Olympic Qualifier
The Gold Medalist from the Silver Gloves will be eligible to compete in this event.

Continental Olympic Qualifier
- Argentina – Date unknown
- Boxing Canada to select the final team
World Olympic Qualifier
Boxing Canada to select the final team
2020 Olympic Games Tokyo, July 24th – August 9th, 2020
Canada athletes qualifying at either the Continental or World qualifying events to attend
New Olympic Cycle For The 2024 Olympic Games
Golden Gloves 2020 – Provincial Championships: Proposed date: Jan 24th – 26th, 2020
For athletes who do not qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games, the next Olympic Cycle kicks off early in the new year with our Provincial Championship. (Note: Due to the possibility of the Canadian Olympic Qualifiers being held in January, the earliest dates possible to secure dates and venue for the Golden Gloves 2020 Ontario Provincial Championships will be in late January. Athletes that do not qualify for the National Team will need to compete in the 2020 Ontario Provincial Championships.)
Subsequent Advancing Tournaments:
Canadian National Boxing Championships, May 11th – 17th, 2020
The winner of this event will earn a spot on Canada’s National team and have the opportunity to represent their country at International boxing events. Location of this event yet to be confirmed.
