The 38th Ontario Sport Awards were held Thursday, April 7 in Toronto, with Boxing Ontario receiving 3 honours.  Hosted by the Sport Alliance of Ontario, with Master of Ceremonies Olympic Rowing icon Marnie McBean, the Sport Awards was a fantastic evening.  The event honoured the best in ALL sports across the province for 2004.  Congratulations to the following recipients:

The Syl Apps Special Achievement Award – President Val Ryan

A Level 4 Official, Val is the current and first female President of Boxing Ontario.  She is also the first female representative on the Boxing Canada Board of Directors, and has carried the torch for women in amateur boxing for the past 17 years.  With Val, every weeknight is spent coaching and every weekend she can be found at a club show or tournament with her team.  Her renowned knowledge of the sport is due to her extensive involvement provincially, nationally, and internationally.  Val was responsible for the establishment of a reserve operating fund as well as an athlete development fund for the first time in Boxing Ontario history.

Corporate Sport Citation – TOP TEN Canada

TOP TEN Canada is world renowned for its innovation in boxing equipment safety.  They have provided Boxing Ontario with new equipment for tournaments, member clubs, promotional activities, and other boxing events.  Their assistance has allowed for the development of elite amateur boxers and boxing clubs across Ontario.

Male Coach of the Year Finalist – Charlie Stewart

Charlie has been a coach for over 30 years and for the last 12 has also been the President of the Windsor Amateur Boxing Club.  Since becoming head coach of the club, he has had athletes compete on the national team every year.  In 2004, Charlie was awarded the Biz-X Award for the most influential and admired coach of the year.  He was also inducted into the Essex County Sport Hall of Fame for helping put Windsor on the map as the first to coach boxers at the Olympic level.  Charlie’s work has inspired his athletes to becoming coaches themselves one day.
