September 29, 2024 | Winnipeg, MB – The Canadian National Boxing Team showcased their talent and resilience at the United Boxing Classic in Winnipeg on September 28th, 2024, delivering a series of impressive performances. This event saw top-level competition against boxers from the U.S., further strengthening the team’s preparation for future international competitions.
Event Results:
- 54kg: Scarlett Delgado (Destiny Boxing, Ontario) narrowly lost a close split decision to Yoseline Perez (Texas). Having secured a win over Yoseline two days prior, Scarlett demonstrated exceptional resolve and grit in another thrilling bout.
- 57kg: Marie Al-Ahmadieh (Pound4Pound, Quebec) delivered a commanding performance against Lisa Greer (Colorado). Marie continues to show improvement, leveraging her fitness and skills for a well-deserved victory.
- 60kg: Keoma-Ali Al-Ahmadieh (Pound4Pound, Quebec) triumphed over Francis Stewart (Ohio), broadening his tactical approach by experimenting with new styles and techniques throughout the bout.
- Omar Zaatiti (Ring 83, Quebec) was unable to participate in his scheduled second bout against Dustin Jimenez (New York) as Jimenez was under the weather.
Coach Vincent Auclair, who was proud of the team’s showing, commented: “Great performances by our boxers once again on the second show. Events like the Melee Gala and UBC Classic are going to help our boxers develop and keep growing boxing in Canada.”
This event exemplifies the critical need for more international bouts to aid in the development of Canadian athletes. While large tournaments such as the World Championships and major games provide exposure, they often limit the number of bouts due to tournament structure and high costs. Domestic and North American shows with international competitors offer invaluable opportunities for Canadian boxers to gain experience and showcase their skills on home soil.
Boxing Canada is executing a National Show Series for 2025-2028. This strategy is to send National Team athletes to domestically-hosted, dual-nation events highlighting our National Team while supporting local clubs. If you are interested in featuring Canadian National Team members in your boxing show, please contact [email protected]. The National Team aims to hold 3-4 of these events annually and integrate National Team athletes and coaches into local gyms for impactful community engagement.
