FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Montreal, QC – August 7, 2025 — Team Canada returned from the 2025 Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt Oder, Germany, with four bronze medals, marking a successful showing at one of Europe’s most competitive youth boxing tournaments.

Bronze medalists:

  • Alexya Ethier (60kg, QC – Club de boxe Underground)
  • Abigail Purdie (70kg, ON – Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy)
  • Julian Angelakis (55kg, BC – Monarc Boxing Club)
  • Odes Besultanov (90+kg, ON – Grant Boxing Gym)

The event featured 19 countries and ran from July 30 to August 2. Prior to the competition, Canadian athletes participated in a six-day training camp hosted by Germany, gaining valuable sparring time with international opponents.

Team Canada’s roster included:

  • Stephanie Jabbor (57kg, QC – Art Martiaux Évolution)
  • Alexya Ethier (60kg, QC – Club de boxe Underground)
  • Abigail Purdie (70kg, ON – Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy)
  • Victor Cheung (50kg, MB – PanAm Boxing Club)
  • Julian Angelakis (55kg, BC – Monarc Boxing Club)
  • Mantej Gill (60kg, ON – King of the Ring)
  • Torren Edmonds (65kg, BC – Nelson Boxing Club)
  • Jacob Pagaling (70kg, AB – Calgary Boxing Club)
  • Porter Hansen (75kg, BC – Nelson Boxing Club)
  • Odes Besultanov (90+kg, ON – Grant Boxing Gym)

The team was led by head coach Brad Ross, with Jesse Pineiro and Ariane Fortin as assistant coaches, and intern coach Yulissa Agudelo.

Tournament Results:

  • Alexya Ethier defeated Australia before falling to England’s world champion in the semifinals.
  • Abigail Purdie opened with a win over Switzerland, then lost to Italy, earning her a spot on the podium.
  • Julian Angelakis picked up two wins against Switzerland and Hungary before withdrawing due to injury.
  • Odes Besultanov secured a win over Azerbaijan before dropping a close bout to Germany in the semis.

Other athletes delivered competitive performances, many against world-class opponents, and continued training and sparring after elimination—showing professionalism and a growth mindset.

The Brandenburg Cup served as a valuable step in the international development of these young athletes. As they gain more exposure and experience, several members of this team are well-positioned to make future podium runs.
