The Myth of Strength Training & Transfer of Strength-Complex Training

“Weight training slows you down. Weight training ruins your cardio. Boxers don’t need to lift weights.” For 3 hours, Dr. Adam Decker and Richard Sylvester (PhD candidate) will address common myths, such as these, about weight training for boxing. The phases of strength training will be explained using evidence-based research and practical tips and tricks for coaches will also be presented.

Adam holds a PhD in Applied Health Science and has worked at all levels of sport from grassroots to Olympic and professional levels. He is an expert in performance science, strength & conditioning, and periodization. Adam currently works in performance science at Cirque du Soleil’s international headquarters in Montreal.

Richard Sylvester is a strength and conditioning specialist with a very diverse career and life experience. He was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he spent 5 years working with athletes at the University of Manitoba and a large number of youth athletes. Afterwards, Richard continued his diverse career by working in Toronto, Ontario and Grande Prairie, Alberta at the Grande Prairie Regional College and Alberta Sport Development Centre NW. Furthermore, Richard recently spent 4 years living in New Zealand. During this time in New Zealand, Richard worked as a youth physical development coach, a speed and power coach for an International Rugby Academy as well as a Netball Academy. Additionally, Richard is currently pursuing his PhD at The Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), with a thesis titled Sprint Characteristics in Youth Female Athletes Across Maturation. His mission is to use his education and experience, in order help athletes achieve success, safety and enjoyment in sport.
