AIBA unveils first official world rankings

AIBA has unveiled an official international men’s world ranking for the first time in its history, with many Olympic medalists from Beijing featuring prominently in the 11 weight categories.

Traditional boxing powerhouse Cuba dominates the first world rankings with seven of the 11 top-ranked boxers, including Olympic silver medalists Yankiel Leon Alarcon (54kg), Emilio Correa Bayeux (75kg) and Carlos Banteur Suarez (69kg). Following Cuba’s absence in Chicago two years ago, all three boxers are expected to be in Milan for this year’s AIBA World Championships.

The lists are compiled according to the number of points won by boxers at ranking events, namely the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Youth World Championships, the Olympic Qualifiers and each of the Confederation Championships. More points are won for performances at the Olympics and the World Championships.

The boxer with the most number of points overall is Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine, Olympic featherweight (57kg) champion and winner of the Val Barker Trophy. Lomachenko has 2,900 points, 400 more than China’s Zou Shiming (48kg), Italy’s Roberto Cammarelle (+91kg), Banteur Suarez and Correa Bayeux all of whom lead their categories with 2,500 points.

Any boxer who changes weight category will be awarded 75 per cent of all points accumulated in his previous weight category. The new lists will help determine the seedings for next month’s AIBA World Championship, the first time seedings have been used at any AIBA world championships. There will be eight seeds in each weight category.
