Ontario Women Battle World’s Best at Tourneo Italia in Rome.

Six Ontario women traveled to Rome last week, competing for Team Canada at the Tourneo Italia Women’s World Tournament, June 9-12.  These women represented Ontario’s Senior Female Team and had an excellent showing against many of the world’s best female fighters.

Leading the way was Windsor’s Mary Spencer, who claimed Gold in the 66kg division after defeating Luminita Turcin of Romania (28-14 on points) and Anna Ingroth of Sweden (35-18 on points) in the final.  The Ontario women captured 1 Gold, 3 Silvers, and 2 Bronze medals.

Next stop for Ontario’s Senior Females is the first-ever Women’s Pan-American Tournament in Argentina in November.  In addition, there is a proposed Women’s World Championships next year and there are still hopes of female boxing in Beijing in the 2008 Olympic Games.
