Friday, December 10 through Sunday December 12, 2004, the best in Ontario will “duke it out” at the Provincial Senior and Junior Open Boxing Championships. This tournament is the highlight of the season for the majority of amateur boxers in Ontario, all of whom are seeking an opportunity to compete at the National Championships next month. The line-up of boxers for the Provincials is one of the strongest in years and there are many key match-ups to look out for this weekend in St. Catharines.
The 57-60kg weight classes in both the Male and Female Senior divisions offer intriguing contests. In the female class Alison Hunter of Border City Boxing (Windsor) boxes Kaydian Morgan of McGrory’s (Hamilton) and Stephanie Swayne of Cabbagetown (Toronto). Alison hopes to return good fortune to her club. In early November a car accident seriously injured her teammates and friends and there is no doubt that she will be thinking of them when she enters the ring against tough competition. In what may be the most exciting bout of the weekend Ibrahim Kamal, who hails from Cabbagetown and is a former National Champion, squares off against Richard Chau from London Boxing Club. One month ago in the Arnie Boehm Open Tournament the two provided an awesome display of speed and power, with Kamal the victor.
The Male Senior 69-75kg class features 11 boxers and promises to be a marathon weekend for the eventual winner. This division is stacked with talent, including the likes of Kevin Van Den Oetelaar (Ottawa Beaver Boxing Club), Richard Reittie (Sully’s Boxing Club – Toronto), and Shabir Brar (Bramalea Boxing Club). Watch out for this category as it surely will be a dramatic title run.
