The best 11-16 year old boxers in the province will square off in Oshawa starting Friday at the Cadet Provincial Championships.  The tournament plays host to over thirty clubs from across Ontario, with the champions making the Provincial Team that travels to the Nationals next month.  The National Cadet Championships will be held in Prince George, British Columbia, April 1-3.  “With all the buzz that the movie Million Dollar Baby has created for boxing, we hope that it will spark an increase in participation and spectatorship,” says tournament host Don Nelson.  “This is the first Provincial Championship held in Oshawa in over 25 years so we are expecting a large crowd.”

Featured this weekend are last year’s National Champions Joey Bowman of Cornwall and hometown hero Jerome Gabriel of Oshawa.  Bowman is only the second national champion ever from Cornwall while Gabriel won the “Best Male Boxer” Award at last year’s Nationals.  Both athletes face strong competition this weekend as the program is absolutely stacked with talent.  Friday night’s Main Bout will feature Canadian Junior Heavyweight Champion Nick “Butterbean” Wilson of Orangeville versus Frankie “The Frankfurt Express” Rill of Oshawa.
