Provincials Wrap up

February 28th – March 3rd 2013

Toronto, ON – On February 28th, 2013 over 100 athletes arrived at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites. These boxers had travelled from across the province for one reason which was to win a provincial title and the opportunity to represent their province and club at nationals. With many anticipated matches for the weekend, there were many other bouts which did not disappoint the hundreds of people who were on hand to watch the matches each day.

Opening night featured many up and coming boxers from various clubs from across the province. The matches which started just after 7 P.M. lasted late into the night and ended just before 12A.M. With 19 bouts throughout the evening, Irwins Boxing Club went 3 for 3 coming away with 3 wins after the evening was complete. It was a great first night for the almost packed house on hand to watch these amazing athletes.

The second day which included 2 sessions was an action filled day with 32 bouts. Boxers from over 15 different clubs participated in Fridays events. 3 of the matches included female bouts and as always did not disappoint with great matchups between all boxers.

Saturday’s sessions contained 5 Youth finals to start off the first session and many matches coming down to the final bell with their decisions. One of the highly anticipated bouts of the afternoon came between Cabbagetown’s Arthur Biyarslanov and BigTyme’s Josh Wagner. Both going toe-to-toe in all 3 rounds, big punches were being landed from both sides. In the end, Wagner came out with the win in a 21 – 17 decision.

The final two sessions on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon included multiple finals and high intensity matches with the Provincial title on the line. For all of these boxers, they had trained months for this weekend. Those hours spent in the gym, pushing themselves for the chance to represent their province was evident in the matches we saw at the 2013 Ontario Provincials.

At Boxing Ontario there are people and organizations we owe many thanks to for making this amazing tournament happen. First, we would like to thank the boxers and the clubs who they represent, as without them and their hard work, this tournament or any other tournament for that matter would not be possible. We would like to thank all of the sponsors who came out to supports this event and stayed with use for the entire weekend;

–          Aqua Hydrate

–          Adidas Canada Fighting

–          Media Suite

To Shawn Floyd and all the officials who willingly volunteered their time for the entire weekend, they are the true warriors of the ring. Their efforts inside and outside of the ring should never go unnoticed. The volunteers who came out to help for the weekend were fantastic and helped the tournament run as efficiently as it did.

 We would like to send a special thanks to Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suits for supplying Boxing Ontario with the great venue and all of the hotel rooms for our athletes, officials and staff. The hotel staff was always helpful and their hospitality was valued by all.
