Why did you first start boxing? Can you describe your progression in the sport?
At 16 years old I had many experiences that made it difficult to express my emotions. I found boxing to be an amazing outlet to help me work through those emotions. As time went on, I noticed how boxing not only significantly helped me, but those around me. I felt very inspired by my coach Boomer and how he dedicated time to younger athletes like myself. This transpired to me looking into coaching and passing my knowledge and skills to other youth as well.
What has your biggest challenge been in the sport of boxing? If applicable, how did you overcome this challenge?
There are many challenges, but most significantly being a female in a male dominated sport. Though I have a lot of support around me, I also face doubt and criticism from others. I tend to stay focused and positive within my goals and only look forward. I am confident in what I have to offer the youth in this industry and will not allow negativity to get in the way.
What has your biggest achievement been in boxing? What did this mean to you personally?
By far my biggest achievement was taking one of my boxers to our very first Nationals and winning gold. I had been coaching this boxer since the start of her boxing career and have seen her commitment and hard work progress throughout the years.
How did you feel when you found out that you were selected to coach for Canada at the U19 World Championships?
I honestly felt that “pinch me” moment, it felt surreal. I’ve been coaching just shy of 4 years and to be given such an opportunity is life changing. Something I’ll never forget.
What are you most excited about for the U19 World Championships?
I am most excited to learn from great coaches such as Samir and Tariq. Getting to experience different teaching techniques and styles will also be very fun! Can’t wait to help the boxers and teams in this experience!
