Summerhays Tournament Rings Bell on New Amateur Boxing Season

This weekend Friday October 1 through Sunday, October 3, amateur boxing hopefuls will compete in the first Boxing Ontario tournament of the 2004-2005 Season.  The Summerhays Tournament in Brantford, a developmental tournament for novice athletes (less than 10 bouts) as well as female open athletes (more than 10 bouts), will host over 45 boxing clubs from across Ontario.

Summerhays is a well known name in Brantford and throughout the boxing community.  Brothers John, Terry, and Gary, for whom the tournament is named, are local boxing legends.John and Gary were both Canadian Lightweight Champions and Terry was a champion welterweight.  Between the three of them they boxed against the likes of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Clyde Gray, and Michael Spinks.  The brothers once boxed at the legendary Madison Square Gardens, all in the same night.  Accompanied by Brantford Mayor Mike Hancock, the Summerhays boys will be in attendance at the tournament to cheer on future boxing stars.

              Saturday, October 2 from 1pm & 7pm
              Sunday, October 3 from 12pm
