ONTARIO WOMEN CHAMPIONS – Newly crowned Pan Am Champions Mary Spencer, Mandy Bujold, and Katie Dunn will be returning to Toronto, Ontario as new Pan American, Women’s Champions this weekend to show off their new gold hardware. In the 66kg category Mary Spencer of Windsor Amateur went undefeated in these championships with her final bout of the tournament winning over Trinidad’s Wendy Allan. Mary Spencer was also the first and only Canadian woman to capture a Gold medal at the Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championships in 2005. In the 50kg, Mandy Bujold of Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy also went undefeated throughout the tournament to capture top spot over USA’s Cheryl Houlihan.Amber Konikow, 75kg, of Top Glove (Sudbury) and Jacqui Park, 48kg, of Steeltown Boxing Club (Hamilton) each came away with hard fought Silver and Bronze medals respectively. In total, 12 females represented Team Canada and are bringing home 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals.

Ontario’s other Gold medalist, Katie Dunn, 63kg, of Border City Boxing Club (Windsor), won her final bout over Celeste Peralta of Argentina. Katie Dunn also captured the Best Boxer Award. It was at this championship where Katie Dunn received confirmation of being chosen to represent amateur boxing women all over the world at the Men’s World Championships in Chicago. Katie Dunn will be going up against the 2006 Women’s World Champion Katie Taylor of Ireland in November.
