22 yr old Kitchener native Mandy Bujold of Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy defeated reigning 48 kg Pan American Champion Erica Matos of Brasil 9-6 to advance to the Gold medal round. Bujold is the reigning 51 kgs Pan Am Champion. This qualifying tournament is being held in Quito, Ecuador (10,000′ above sea level).
The win has secured Bujold 1 of 7 spots for the Pan American Games to be held in Guadalajara Mexico in October, 2012. Like the Olympics, only 3 weight categories (51, 60 and 75kgs) in the female division will be featured in Mexico.
Mandy will now face Jemyma Betrain of Aruba in the Gold Medal match today. Betrain defeated Christina Cruz of the USA 15-5 to advance to the finals.
