The Men’s World Championships begins this weekend and top boxers from all over the world are gathering in Mianyang, China.  Canada’s team consists of 2 Ontario men, Olympian Adam Trupish and Cabbagetown’s Ibrahim Kamal (inset).

Nicknamed “Fire Arm,” Kamal is looking to make a name for himself on the global stage.  He is not a stranger to international competition, having boxed recently in the Multi-Nations Cup and winning a silver medal.  But this is where the best of the best converge, and where heroes in the international boxing scene are born.  “The Chinese will be very tough,” said Kamal from training camp in Vancouver on Tuesday.  “They are much tougher and want to look good for the 2008 Olympics so they are now a tough draw… they will have the home field advantage, in a new 10,000 seat stadium, it will be pretty surreal.”  Kamal also expects countries like Russia, Cuba, and Kazakhstan to be his main competition, although he says any opponent will be a difficult draw at this level.
