A NOTE FROM THE BOXING ONTARIO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jennifer Huggins, President

I have been an active member of Boxing Ontario for over 15 years as a boxer, coach and official. Beyond the tremendous impact which the sport of boxing has had on me personally during this time, I have also witnessed the transformative effect of boxing in so many others’ lives.
In January of this year, I had the pleasure of taking on the role of Provincial Official for Ontario. We’ve since facilitated 3 tournaments and successfully executed one of Ontario’s largest advancing tournaments in our sport’s history. In less than one year, our team has started working with the clubs, coaches and boxers, to help develop structures and lines of communication aimed at advancing the quality, safety and professionalism of the sport of boxing.

I’m honoured to have the trust of the membership as I embark on the Precedency of Boxing Ontario. I realize this is a huge responsibility and won’t take it for granted. I truly believe we have incredible talent in our province coupled with access to the best resources. I know that we will achieve world-class success with clear, united direction.

As an active Official with Boxing Canada and AIBA Boxing, I’m fortunate to be included in seminars by International Boxing top executives and course facilitators on each International assignment. I’m excited to bring back the knowledge and strategies being provided at the highest level of boxing to our local association, membership and ultimately to the athletes of Boxing Ontario.

I’m looking forward to helping to create structures and transparency, while investing back into the province and sport that has completed my life!

Syd Vanderpool

My father John, introduced myself and 4 older brothers to the physical regime of training for boxing very early on. With over 100 amateur bouts, my first amateur fight came at the age of 6.
In 1991 I was a Canadian National champion and fought alongside teammates Arturo Gatti and Kirk Johnson. In March of 1993, I made the decision to start a 13 year professional boxing career.
I have extensively trained with some of the world’s finest trainers including the legendary Emanuel Stewart, Goody Petronelli, John Davenport, Arnie Boehm, and Adrian Teodorescu.

My unique abilities in and out of the ring allow me to be a motivational coach and speaker. My experience training with world-renowned athletes such as Lennox Lewis, Zab Judah and Hector Camacho gives me insight into the higher levels of professional sport.  These experiences ultimately led me to achieve the IBF #1 world ranking in May 2002. I retired in 2005 with a professional record of 35-4 with 23 knockouts

Now I bring my love of sport to the SydFIT Health Centre, as a successful business owner, mentor and Elite Trainer, where I share my passion with athletes and coaches alike.

Michael Williamson

Dear members, I started boxing in 1985, obtained my coaching certificate in 1995 and in 2019 I also became an official.  I began taking the coaching role more seriously over the last ten years and even more recently have volunteered a significant amount of time to the organization.  I have spent 2 years on the High-Performance Committee and 10 months on the Strategic Planning Committee.  I have a formal education in business, project management, computer sciences and I have a masters electrical license.

Having experience in contract law, bylaws and policy, I have been a contributor in reviewing our governance structure for the strategic plan and can say I have seen firsthand where we need to build.

I WILL bring real transparency and accountability putting the members first.  We have some of the best coaches and athletes in the country and I would like to help build the structure that supports them in making Boxing Ontario the strongest organization in Canada.

Lee Smith

I joined Boxing Ontario in 2008 as a boxer with Liverpool Boxing Club under Preston Roberts. It was from there that I became a coach. Shortly thereafter, I became an official in 2009. I am currently a Level 4 official.

To help our athletes and our boxing community, I have held open sparring and referee training across Ontario with the goal to help our boxers (male and female), to help clubs’ network with each other, and to help train new officials.  I also assist clubs with matchmaking for their club competitions.

I want to make a difference and change to better our athletes, coaches, officials, clubs and Boxing Ontario. I want to see us succeed and grow.

Fred Ten Eyck
I am currently pursuing my Level 2 Coaching with Boxing Canada through Boxing Ontario. Also related to Boxing I took my knowledge of patient care and created a cut person program for Boxing Ontario coaches and athletes. I did extensive research and had many discussions with coaches and athletes to determine their wants and needs; further to this I reached out to medical professionals to vet the program. I utilized the AIBA Rules and Technical guidelines to determine what was right. Also to show the dedication to growing Boxing Ontario I put $20 from each registrant back to Boxing Ontario to support programs and athletes directly.

I hope the above shows my dedication to any project I take on, my goal is to ensure Boxing Ontario moves forward in a positive, transparent and supportive process. We can all work to build the best Boxing Ontario there can be for us and the future.
